Resilience & competitiveness
Defra has a direct interest in promoting the competitiveness of the agricultural industry and the businesses within it. We also want to promote its resilience, which means both its ability to mitigate or withstand shocks, and how well placed it is to recover quickly from them.
We want to see a farming sector that is competitive and producing food that consumers want in an environmentally sustainable way. This will help to ensure that future generations can produce food and benefit from our natural resources and landscapes.
A key part of this picture will involve creating the conditions for a more innovative, self-reliant, profitable and competitive farming industry.
We have been developing our ideas on how resilient and competitive England’s agricultural industry is, and exploring what else can be done to improve its competitiveness and bolster its resilience. In this online discussion we sought your views about the ideas we have developed.
We asked for your thoughts on the following topics:
- The resilience of the English farming industry and the key risks
- What drives resilience?
- The competitiveness of the English farming industry
- The links and tensions between these areas
- What we might do to bolster farming’s resilience and improve competitiveness.
The on-line discussion has now closed. Thank you for all your comments and interest which are still available to view. These will be extremely useful in developing our thinking in this important area.
